Which plate for which crop

Common setups from the Kwik Klik instructions. Thicker plates and bigger holes drop more seed; thinner plates and smaller holes drop fewer. Arugula, basil, broccoli, kale and turnip seed can stick to the plate, so a light spray of anti-static helps.

Add-on plate questions

Still not sure which kit? Email hello@moderngrower.co or call 877-850-1555.

Do I need a frame?

Yes. These are plates only and fit the Kwik Klik Slide frame. If you don't have one yet, get a Kwik Klik Slide seeding kit, which includes the frame and plates for one tray type.

Will these fit my older Kwik Klik?

The plates are made for the Kwik Klik Slide. If you have the older handle version, email hello@moderngrower.co before ordering, and ask about the upgrade discount.

How do I control how many seeds go in each cell?

With the top plate. Three things set the count: the tray's cell pattern, the plate thickness and the hole diameter. A thin plate with small holes drops fewer seeds; a thick plate with bigger holes drops more. Check the chart above for common crops.

Does it work with pelleted seed?

Yes, raw or pelleted. Pelleted seed is the best way to get one seed per cell for crops like carrots, fennel and Salanova.

What about seed that sticks to the plate?

Small seeds like arugula, basil, broccoli, kale and turnip can cling to the plate with static. A light spray of anti-static such as ACL Staticide, wiped with a microfiber cloth, fixes it. Reapply as needed.

Which crops can't it seed?

Raw lettuce, dill, peas and unpelleted celery are irregular in size and shape, so they're best seeded by hand or bought pelleted.

Can you make plates for my trays?

Yes. We cut custom plates for 50 and 200 cell trays, Winstrip trays, Oasis cubes, Proptek trays and more. Email hello@moderngrower.co.

How should I store the plates?

Flat on a shelf, like dinner plates. Don't hang them or stand them on edge, and keep them out of heat, direct sun and humidity. The acrylic can warp, which affects how they seed.

About Kwik Klik add-on plate packages

Kwik Klik add-on plate packages let growers who already own a Kwik Klik Slide drop seeder seed another tray type with the same frame. Each package includes a bottom plate cut to the tray's cell pattern and top plates sized for common seeds.

Packages

Cell tray packages are made for Paperpot 264-cell trays, 72 and 128 cell trays, and 72W and 128W Airstrip trays. Each has one bottom plate and three top plates: 1.5 mm thick with 2.5 mm holes for small seeds like basil, arugula and kale, 3 mm with 3 mm holes for medium seeds and small clusters, and 3 mm with 5 mm holes for larger and pelleted seed. The 1020 microgreen package has a microgreen bottom plate and six 3 mm top plates with holes from 5 to 10 mm.

Switching trays

Loosen the frame's tensioning screws, slide the plates out, slide the new bottom and top plates in and retighten until the top plate slides smoothly. Custom plates are available for other trays, including 50 and 200 cell, Winstrip, Oasis cubes and Proptek.
